What does the 'cracking noise' mean?

The cracking noise often heard during spinal manipulation is known as "cavitation." This sound is produced when a quick, controlled force is applied to a joint, causing a release of gas bubbles from the synovial fluid within the joint capsule.

It's important to note that the cracking sound itself is not harmful and does not necessarily indicate a successful adjustment. The effectiveness of spinal manipulation is more related to the relief of symptoms and improved function rather than the audible noise.

Why does gas build up between joints?

Joints naturally accrue nitrogen bubbles over time, because of the synovial fluid that serves as a lubricant for them. These bubbles can build up in the spaces of a joint, and cause the joint to feel tight. When this happens, you can “crack” the joint to loosen it, releasing the gas from it's bubbles

What causes gas build up in synovial fluid?

Inside the synovial fluid is a variety of gases including nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. The pressure inside the joint capsule changes when the joint is stretched beyond its normal range of motion, creating a vacuum and forming a bubble from gases being dissolved in the fluid.

Where does the gas from popping joints go?

Once you let go of your finger, the gas bubble is reabsorbed by the fluid in the joint.

What should I do after the session?

Everyone responds to treatment differently. You may feel sore for a day or two after treatment. Some people feel tired after treatment. Others feel energized. After each treatment session, you should:

  • Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated allows toxins to flush out of your muscles after treatment.
  • Go for a walk: A short walk helps your body “settle in” or adjust to the proper alignment and balance.
  • Take it easy: Avoid rigorous physical activity for 24 hours after each treatment. Focus on breathing and allowing your body time to rest.
